HP acquires 3Com and steps up battle with Cisco

Edegem, 22 April 2010

Hewlett Packard has extended its offering through the acquisition of 3Com and has stepped up its battle with Cisco for the data centre market.

Many of 3Com’s products complement the activities of HP’s existing networking division, HP ProCurve. Moreover, 3Com’s TippingPoint security software was also acquired at the same time. 3Com’s offering is to be integrated with HP ProCurve.

In recent months, rivalry between data centre specialists such as HP, IBM and Cisco has grown. Cisco has tried to gain ground in the data centre market by announcing new servers, among other things. HP and Cisco are both trying to create a total solution that will allow partners and clients to purchase a single, integrated solution and thus avoid having to combine numerous partial solutions.
