SOS storage
Edegem, 12 July 2010
The need for data storage has never been greater. File sizes keep growing, more parameters must be introduced, files contain more multimedia content... Every company has its own specific reasons for an increasing demand for storage. While this trend has been growing for some time among large companies, data storage is set to become an issue for SMEs too.
But data storage often comes with a hefty price tag. Not only are storage drives a considerable investment, but company productivity also depends on a reliable storage system. Storing old data, for example e-mails, on the same level as recent information will slow down the system in the long run. Since prevention is better than cure, companies – including SMEs – are advised to discuss possible solutions before their IT infrastructure gets into difficulties.
Older data can safely be archived on machines that are slightly less high-performance and less expensive. Removing archive data from daily storage is therefore highly recommended, as it is the only way to postpone having to purchase expensive drives. Both software and hardware solutions are available for this purpose. At software level, there is the possibility of implementing a package such as Symantec Enterprise Vault, which can be used to archive e-mails, files, SharePoint data and similar information. Hardware architecture for archiving ensures that specific blocks of data are moved to less expensive disks entirely automatically.
